How to choose the right AI assistant for your needs

Most people don’t need the “best” AI assistant in the abstract. They need the one that works where they do: at a desk, around the house or on a phone. This guide sorts the main options by those situations, then gives you a short checklist to make the call.

Start with where you will use it

Assistants have split into two families that are slowly merging:

• Chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini live in apps and browsers. You type or talk, attach files, and get long, detailed answers.
• Voice assistants such as Alexa+ and Siri live on speakers, phones, TVs and cars. They are built for quick, hands-free requests and controlling devices.

Since 2025 the voice assistants have been rebuilt on the same kind of large language models as the chat assistants, so the gap in intelligence is closing. The gap in where they run is not.

For work, study and research

At a desk, the quality of writing and reasoning matters most, followed by how well the assistant handles your files and whether your organisation can manage it.

ChatGPT is the well-rounded default. It combines chat with web search, file analysis, image generation, voice and agent features, and OpenAI sells Business and Enterprise plans with admin controls.

Claude is a strong choice for long documents, careful editing and software development. Its paid plans include Claude Code, which works in the terminal and IDE, and Team and Enterprise plans add shared usage and security controls.

Gemini makes the most sense if your work already lives in Gmail, Google Docs and Drive, because it can work with that content directly.

For the home

At home, your hardware usually makes the decision for you:

• Amazon Echo speakers and displays run Alexa+, which is free with Prime.
• Google Nest devices and the Google Home Speaker run Gemini for Home; a Google Home Premium subscription adds extras such as Gemini Live.
• HomePod runs Siri.

On your phone

• iPhone: Siri AI is built into iOS 27 on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and every iPhone 16 model or later. You can still install ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini alongside it.
• Android: Gemini is Google’s assistant on Android and is deeply tied into the operating system. ChatGPT and Claude apps are available too.

A practical setup for many people is the built-in assistant for quick, hands-free tasks and a chat assistant app for longer work.

For coding

All three chat assistants write and explain code. For day-to-day development, look at the dedicated tools: Claude Code (included with Claude Pro and above), OpenAI’s Codex for ChatGPT subscribers, and Google’s Gemini-based developer tools. The best test is a real task in your own repository.

A five-question checklist

1. Where will you use it most — at a desk, at home or on your phone?
2. Which ecosystem are you already in — Google, Apple, Amazon or Microsoft?
3. What will you ask it to do — write, research, code, or control devices?
4. Will it see sensitive information? If so, look at business plans and their data controls.
5. Is the free tier enough? Upgrade only when you hit the limits on tasks you do every week.

Privacy: what to check before you commit

Whichever assistant you choose, look for three settings: whether your conversations can be used to train models and how to opt out, how long conversations and voice recordings are kept, and how to delete them. On smart speakers, also check for a physical microphone mute button.

There is no single winner. For most people the right answer is one chat assistant for work — ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini — plus the voice assistant that matches their phone and speakers. Start with the free tiers, test real tasks, and pay only for the one you keep coming back to.
