What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT combines conversation with built-in tools: web search, file and image analysis, image generation, voice conversations and agent features that can complete tasks in a browser on the user's behalf.

OpenAI's current models are the GPT-5.6 family, released in July 2026, and the GPT-6 family, which began with Astra on September 3, 2026 and added Sol and Luna in ChatGPT Work and Codex on September 22 and GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29. Which model answers a request depends on the plan and the tool.

ChatGPT has a free tier, paid individual plans and Business and Enterprise plans for organisations. In the US, Go costs $8 a month, Plus $20 and Pro $100, $200 or $500 (new Pro $200 sign-ups reopened on September 29, 2026 with a lower allowance, and Pro 500 adds Ultrafast). Pro and Business Premium users can also create dots, always-on agents. Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna; Plus adds GPT-5.6 Sol with adjustable thinking, and Pro adds GPT-6 Pro.

ChatGPT FAQ

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes. ChatGPT has a free tier with usage limits. Paid plans — Go, Plus and Pro for individuals, Business and Enterprise for organisations — raise those limits and unlock newer models and features. Plus costs $20 a month in the US.

Which model does ChatGPT use?

It depends on your plan and the tool. As of September 2026, chat on Free and Go uses GPT-5.6 Luna, Plus uses GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking levels, and Pro adds GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model. GPT-6 Sol and Luna are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

What is the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?

Go costs $8 a month in the US and gives you more messages, uploads, image creation and memory than the free plan, using GPT-5.6 Luna. Plus costs $20 and adds GPT-5.6 Sol with adjustable thinking, expanded deep research and Codex, legacy models and no ads.

Does ChatGPT have ads?

Ads may appear for people on the Free and Go plans, below a response and labelled as sponsored. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't see ads, and OpenAI says ads don't influence answers. Free and Go users can turn off ad personalisation in Settings under Ad Controls.

Who makes ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is made by OpenAI, which released it to the public on November 30, 2022.
