The short answer

Choose Grok if you want real-time answers that draw on posts on X, its flagship Grok 4.6 model on the free plan and built-in image and video generation, with SuperGrok at $30 a month. Choose ChatGPT if you want a more complete everyday assistant for writing, research, files and projects, with plans from $8 (Go) to $200 (Pro) a month.

Grok and ChatGPT answer questions, write, search the web, generate images and hold voice conversations, so on paper they look alike. The differences are in where their information comes from, what each gives away for free and how much each can do beyond a chat. Grok, made by SpaceXAI (the company formerly called xAI), is tied closely to X. ChatGPT, from OpenAI, is a general-purpose assistant built to handle everything from quick questions to long projects.

Models and intelligence

Grok 4.6, released on August 12, 2026, is SpaceXAI’s flagship, and it is available on every Grok plan, including the free one. Paid plans raise the limits and add Expert mode for harder questions.

ChatGPT gives free and Go users GPT-5.6 Luna, OpenAI’s fastest model. Plus adds GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High thinking levels, and Pro adds GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s most capable model.

On benchmarks the two flagships are close. SpaceXAI reports that Grok 4.6 matches GPT-5.6 Sol on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, a composite of nine benchmarks. In everyday use, the tools around the model matter more than a few points on a leaderboard.

Real-time information and X

Grok’s clearest advantage is its connection to X. Alongside web search, it can draw on posts on X, so it is quick to summarise what people are saying about a live event, a product launch or a market move. Free users get this with limits, and paid plans raise them.

The trade-off is reliability. Posts on X spread fast before they are confirmed, and an answer built on them can repeat a rumour. ChatGPT searches the web and links to the pages it used, which is slower to pick up breaking chatter but easier to verify. With either assistant, check the sources before you act on a claim.

Images and video

Grok Imagine generates images on every plan and video on paid plans: SuperGrok makes HD 720p clips up to 30 seconds long, and SuperGrok Plus adds 1080p. If you make a lot of short visual content, Grok packs more into its plans.

ChatGPT generates and edits images inside the chat, with limited use on the free plan and higher limits on Go and Plus. You refine a picture conversationally, which makes it easy to adjust details step by step.

Writing, research and everyday tasks

For work that builds over time, ChatGPT is the stronger assistant. Memory, projects and custom GPTs keep your context and preferences, deep research writes structured reports from many sources, and file uploads and data analysis handle spreadsheets and PDFs. Grok also writes, analyses and researches well, but ChatGPT has more tools for organising ongoing work.

Agents and coding

Both companies now sell agents that finish jobs on their own. Grok Bot, launched in beta in August 2026, gives you digital teammates with their own cloud computer, browser and terminal. It is included with SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus and SuperGrok Heavy, with its own usage allowance. ChatGPT Work takes a goal, makes a plan and produces documents, spreadsheets, presentations and reports, drawing on the apps you connect.

For software development, compare Grok Build, which is included on every Grok plan, with OpenAI’s Codex, which has limited use on Free and Go and more from Plus. Try each on a task in your own code before you commit.

Safety and trust

Grok has a looser, more irreverent style than ChatGPT, and some people choose it for that. It has also faced more controversy: in early 2026, CNBC reported that Grok’s image tools had been used to create non-consensual sexual images of adults and children. OpenAI and SpaceXAI both publish content policies and minimum ages for their apps. If you are choosing an assistant for a family or a workplace, review each company’s controls before you sign up.

Grok gives more away on its free plan, and ChatGPT is cheaper once you pay: Plus costs $10 a month less than SuperGrok. OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200 Pro tier on September 10, 2026; the $100 tier isn’t affected.

Which should you choose?

If you want real-time takes on what’s happening on X, a capable model for free and plenty of images and video, choose Grok. If you want an assistant for writing, research, files and projects that you’ll use every day, choose ChatGPT. Both have free plans, so give each the same real task before paying.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grok better than ChatGPT?

It depends on the job. Grok's strengths are real-time context from X, image and video generation, and a free plan that includes its flagship model. ChatGPT is the more complete assistant for writing, research, file analysis and long-running projects. On raw intelligence the flagships are close — SpaceXAI reports that Grok 4.6 matches GPT-5.6 Sol on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.

Why do people use Grok instead of ChatGPT?

Mostly for up-to-the-minute answers that draw on posts on X, for Grok Imagine's image and video generation, and because the free plan includes Grok 4.6. People who already spend time on X also like having Grok built into the app.

Should I pay for ChatGPT or Grok?

If you mainly write, research and work with documents, ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month is the better value. If you mainly want real-time answers about what's happening on X and plenty of image and video generation, SuperGrok at $30 a month is the better fit. Try both free plans first.

Who is more honest, ChatGPT or Grok?

Neither is reliably accurate. Both can state wrong facts with confidence, and answers based on posts on X can repeat claims that are circulating before they are confirmed. For anything important, ask for sources and check them yourself.

Is Grok free?

Yes. The free plan includes Grok 4.6, image generation, voice mode and limited real-time web and X search. Paid plans add video generation, Expert mode and higher limits, and Grok Bot starts with SuperGrok at $30 a month.
