What is Gemini?
Gemini started life as Bard in March 2023 and was renamed Gemini in February 2024. Google has since been replacing Google Assistant with Gemini across phones, smart speakers and displays; the Google Home Speaker, released in June 2026, was designed around it.
Gemini is multimodal: it can reason over text, images, audio, video and files, and connects to Google services such as Gmail, Docs, Maps and YouTube.
The Gemini app has a free tier. Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month), Google AI Pro ($19.99) and Google AI Ultra (from $99.99) add higher limits and extras such as more cloud storage. Tasks in Gemini (first called Gemini Spark), Google's personal agent for tasks and schedules, need AI Pro or Ultra, and skills are replacing Gems from November 2026.

Yes. The Gemini app has a free tier. Google AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions add higher usage limits, from 2x the free plan on Plus to up to 20x Pro on Ultra, plus extras like more cloud storage.
Has Gemini replaced Google Assistant?
On most devices, yes. Google has been moving phones, smart speakers and smart displays from Google Assistant to Gemini, and the Google Home Speaker released on June 25, 2026 was built for Gemini for Home.
What happened to Google Bard?
