ChatGPT Pro explained: Pro 100, Pro 200 and the new Pro 500, usage limits and what changed

ChatGPT Pro is OpenAI’s top individual plan, and since September 29, 2026 it comes in three versions: Pro 100, Pro 200 and the new Pro 500. All three share the same core features and differ in how much usage you get and, for Pro 500, in speed. OpenAI also ended the pause on new Pro 200 sign-ups that began on September 10, but new subscribers now get a lower usage allowance. This guide explains what each tier includes, the limits, what changed this week and who each plan suits, using OpenAI’s Help Center, release notes and DevDay recap.

What every Pro tier includes

OpenAI says all Pro plans include:

• Pro models
• Codex, its coding agent
• Deep research
• Image creation
• Memory
• File uploads

In ChatGPT’s model picker, Pro also unlocks the higher thinking levels and GPT-6 Astra, which appears in chat as GPT-6 Pro and is also available in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Pro users in eligible markets can also create a dot, the always-on agent OpenAI announced at DevDay. Your first dot is included at no extra cost, and conversations with it don’t count toward your usage limits, though tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do. See What are ChatGPT dots?.

What is new: Pro 500 and Ultrafast

Pro 500 costs $500 a month and offers the highest included usage of the Pro plans, which OpenAI’s DevDay recap puts at 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance. Its distinguishing feature is Astra Ultrafast in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Ultrafast is a premium speed tier, with up to 8x faster token generation (300 tokens per second) in Codex and up to 6x in the API. You choose it in the model picker, and it uses your included allowance first and then your credit balance.

Among Pro plans, Ultrafast is only on Pro 500, and OpenAI says buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 doesn’t unlock it. Pro 500 subscriptions are available through ChatGPT on the web at launch. GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast is coming soon.

The Pro 200 change

OpenAI’s help page says Pro 200 is available for new subscriptions again at $200 a month. The catch is the allowance:

• New subscriptions that aren’t eligible for grandfathering get a lower usage allowance than Pro 200 offered before, which OpenAI attributes to its increasingly efficient models. The price stays $200.
• Existing subscribers whose Pro 200 subscription was active at the eligibility cutoff, or during the seven days before it, keep the previous allowance through October 29, 2026 while the subscription stays active. After that, it moves to the lower allowance at the same price. Only affected users get an email.
• Cancelling and resubscribing: if your subscription lapsed during those seven days, you can still get the previous allowance through October 29 by subscribing again. Otherwise you receive the updated allowance.
• Keeping the old allowance doesn’t upgrade you. It is still Pro 200, with no Ultrafast.

OpenAI hasn’t published the new allowance numbers in the pages we read, so the earlier figures below may change.

Usage limits

Pro isn’t unlimited. Some models have separate usage allowances, and at a model’s limit it may be unavailable until the allowance resets, with the reset time shown when available. A usage limit doesn’t end your subscription or restrict your account. OpenAI says there is no setting to raise or bypass a limit and Support can’t reset one.

Buying more usage

For eligible features you can buy credits to continue after your included allowance runs out, used after your plan’s included usage. OpenAI says credits support eligible usage in Codex, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and that they don’t add usage for every model or feature. Billing and plan changes

• Pro is billed monthly. There is no annual plan, and you can’t prepay for several months.
• Change your plan from Settings, then My Plan. Cancel through the platform where you bought it, whether ChatGPT, Apple or Google Play. Uninstalling the app doesn’t cancel.
• Cancelling keeps access until the end of the billing period, and you can undo a scheduled cancellation before then.
• A personal Pro subscription continues if you join a ChatGPT Business workspace, as long as you keep your personal workspace separate. Merging it into Business changes how the subscription is handled.

Who should choose which plan?

• You use ChatGPT for everyday work: Plus at $20 is likely enough. See ChatGPT Go vs Plus.
• You use Codex, deep research or Work heavily and keep hitting Plus limits: Pro 100 is the entry point.
• You want more headroom than Pro 100: Pro 200, noting that new subscribers get the lower allowance.
