Best smart speakers in 2026: Echo, Google Home Speaker, HomePod mini and Sonos

Smart speakers have split into two questions: which assistant do you want, and how much do you care about sound quality? Amazon, Google and Apple each build speakers around their own assistant, while Sonos builds speakers that work with more than one. This guide compares the current lineup — Amazon Echo, the Google Home Speaker, Apple’s HomePod mini and Sonos Era — with US prices as of September 2026.

Amazon Echo: Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio

Amazon’s newest Echo speakers are built around Alexa+, its generative-AI assistant. The Echo Dot Max costs $99.99 and the Echo Studio costs $219.99, both available now. Amazon followed with two smart displays, the Echo Show 8 ($179.99) and Echo Show 11 ($219.99), on November 12. Amazon says every new Echo device includes Alexa+ Early Access out of the box.

Google Home Speaker

The Google Home Speaker is Google’s first new standalone smart speaker since the Nest Audio in 2020, released on June 25, 2026 at $99.99. It’s built for Gemini for Home, Google’s assistant that handles multi-part commands, lets you correct yourself mid-sentence and remembers context for follow-up questions. It comes in Porcelain and Hazel, with Jade and Berry exclusive to the US.

Gemini for Home’s voice assistant and Ask Home are free; the paid Google Home Premium subscription adds Gemini Live conversations, searchable camera history and Home Briefs. Apple HomePod mini

The HomePod mini is built around Siri and Apple’s ecosystem: pair it with an iPhone or Mac, and it becomes an AirPlay speaker as well as a voice assistant. Apple raised its US price from $99 to $129 in June 2026, and it’s available in Blue, Yellow, Midnight, White and Orange. It’s the natural choice if your household already runs on Apple devices and you want Siri AI on your desk as well as your phone.

Sonos Era 100 and Era 300

Sonos builds speakers around sound first and locks you into fewer choices on assistant. The Era 100 ($199) is a stereo bookshelf speaker, and the Era 300 ($449) adds spatial audio with Dolby Atmos. Both have Sonos Voice Control built in and can also be controlled through Amazon Alexa; on supported models you can stream from Apple AirPlay too. If you already own other Sonos speakers, or you want a smart speaker that doesn’t tie you to one voice assistant, Sonos is the option that keeps your choices open.

Which smart speaker should you buy?

• You want Alexa+ and Amazon’s ecosystem: Echo Dot Max for a starting point, Echo Studio for bigger sound.
• You live in Google’s apps (Gmail, Calendar, Maps): the Google Home Speaker.
• You’re all-in on Apple: the HomePod mini, for Siri and AirPlay.
• Sound quality matters most, and you want flexibility on voice assistant: a Sonos Era speaker.
