What is Alexa+? Price, compatible devices, features and how to get it

Alexa+ is Amazon’s rebuilt Alexa, powered by generative AI. It holds a natural conversation, remembers your household, and can take actions such as booking a table, building a smart-home routine or ordering food. What Alexa+ can do

According to Amazon, Alexa+ can:

• Run your smart home: create routines by describing them, and work with devices from brands such as Philips Hue and Roborock.
• Make reservations: book tables with OpenTable and appointments through Vagaro.
• Play music: discover artists and play music from Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music and iHeartRadio.
• Order food: work with Grubhub and Uber Eats.
• Handle agentic tasks: complete tasks on your behalf through partners such as Thumbtack.
• Shop: search for and buy items on Echo devices and on the Amazon site and app.
• Make suggestions: Amazon’s help page lists suggestions among its core abilities.

Amazon says Alexa+ works with the more than 600 million Alexa devices already in use, and points to the Alexa Privacy dashboard for privacy controls.

Personality and voice

Alexa+ has an upbeat and curious personality with new voices, and you can ask it in a specific style, for example “Give me the weather like a pirate”. Amazon describes four personality styles, Brief, Chill, Sweet and Sassy. The visual animations that appear with Alexa+ voice responses can’t be turned off.

What it costs

Amazon’s announcement gives the US price as free with Prime and $19.99 a month without it. Amazon’s help pages add some detail:

• Prime members get Alexa+ at no extra cost.
• Non-Prime customers can join Prime or take the Alexa+ Standard plan, both through amazon.com/alexaplus.
• All customers get a free, limited Alexa+ experience through Alexa.com, the Alexa app and app-supported devices, but no free Alexa+ on devices such as Echo and Fire TV.
• Amazon said when it announced its newest Echo devices that anyone who orders a new Echo device gets access to Alexa+ out of the box. An Alexa+ bundled with a device belongs to the account that registered it.
• Outside the US: Amazon’s international announcement says Alexa+ costs $27.99 CAD a month plus tax in Canada unless you are a Prime member. In Australia, where early access began on August 6, it is free during early access and then included with Prime, or AU$29.99 a month for non-Prime members. In India, early access began on September 16 and is free, after which it is free for Prime members and INR 2,000 a month for Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition and non-Prime customers.

Where Alexa+ is available

Alexa+ is available to all customers in the US and Canada, where it works in both English and French. Amazon’s international announcement lists free Early Access programs in the UK, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and India, says more countries are coming, and says it will expand to more than 10 additional countries in 2027. Amazon also says to check amazon.com/alexaplus for compatibility in your country. Alexa+ also needs a supported language and location, and works with personal Amazon accounts only, not Amazon Business or Enterprise accounts. It is compatible with Amazon Family.

Which devices work with Alexa+

Most current Echo devices do. Amazon lists these as never compatible:

• Echo (1st and 2nd generation)
• Echo Dot (1st generation)
• Echo Plus (1st generation)
• Echo Buds (1st generation)
• Echo Show (1st and 2nd generation)
• Echo Spot (1st generation)
• Amazon Tap
• Fire TV devices on FireOS 5
• Fire Tablets running FireOS 7 or earlier

Any of these on an account with Alexa+ continue with the original Alexa. If your device isn’t listed, Amazon says to check amazon.com/alexaplus for compatibility in your country. Our Echo profile covers the range.

How to turn on Alexa+

1. Go to amazon.com/alexaplus and sign up, or say “Alexa, upgrade!” to an Echo device.
2. If you joined Prime through Alexa channels, or chose the Standard plan, Alexa+ activates automatically. If you joined Prime somewhere else, activate Alexa+ separately.
3. Alexa+ then introduces itself, learns your name and interests, creates a profile, helps you invite household members and offers voice recognition.

Amazon’s requirements page suggests saying “Check for software updates” to make sure your Echo has the latest software.

How to cancel Alexa+

• Prime members: deactivate Alexa+ at alexaplus.com. You lose access immediately, or at the end of your Prime period if you cancel Prime instead.
• Standard plan subscribers: go to Your Memberships and Subscriptions and choose Cancel My Subscription. You keep the benefits until the end of your billing cycle.
• By voice: say “End Alexa+”. Your device reverts to the original Alexa with Follow Up Mode on.
• The free, limited Alexa+ experience on Alexa.com and in the app can’t be deactivated.
