Claude review 2026: Opus 5.5, Fable 5.1, tasks, Claude Code, Free to Max pricing, pros, cons and who it suits
Our Claude review covers the Claude 5.5 and Fable models, tasks, Claude Code, Design, Slides and Docs, plus Free, Pro and Max pricing, pros, cons and who should use it.
The short answer
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant and one of the strongest choices for writing, long documents, research and coding. Since September 2026 chat and Cowork are one experience, so Claude can take on bigger tasks and hand back finished files. The free plan includes Design, Slides and Docs; Pro costs $20 a month ($17 billed annually) and Max $100 or $200.
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, and in 2026 it has become a lot more than a chat window. Since September, chat and Claude Cowork have merged into one experience, so the same conversation can answer a quick question or work through a report, spreadsheet or deck and hand back the finished file. This review covers what Claude can do, what each plan costs, where it is strong and where it is limited, and who should use it. It is based on Anthropic’s own pricing page, help center and release notes as of October 2026. We haven’t run extended hands-on tests, so treat the strengths below as what Anthropic documents rather than our own measurements.

What Claude can do
- One conversation for questions and tasks. Anthropic’s help center says you no longer pick between Chat and Cowork. Describe the outcome you want and Claude searches the web, reads your files, runs code and puts the results together. Longer tasks keep running in the cloud if you close your laptop, and you can check in from your phone. The new experience is rolling out to Pro and Max first. Read Claude Cowork and chat merge and What is Claude Cowork?.
- Finished files. Claude creates documents, spreadsheets with working formulas and presentations you can open in PowerPoint.
- Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Since September 16 you can ask for a design, deck or living document in any conversation and edit it with Claude or directly. Artifacts, including all three, are available on every plan, including Free. See Claude Design, Slides and Docs.
- Claude Code. Anthropic’s coding agent works in the terminal, IDEs, desktop and web, and is included with Pro and Max. Our Claude Code tutorial shows how to start.
- Your computer and browser. In Claude Desktop, Claude can work with a folder on your computer and browse with its built-in browser or Claude in Chrome. Computer use, where Claude clicks and types in your apps, is in beta on Pro and Max.
- Connectors, skills and plugins. Connect apps such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Slack, teach Claude repeatable steps with skills, and add plugins built for your role. Pro adds Claude for Microsoft 365 and Claude in Chrome.
- Research, projects and memory. Research, Claude’s deep research mode, starts on Pro. Projects keep files and instructions together (up to five on Free). Memory is on by default on Free, Pro and Max, lists everything Claude remembers under Topics in Settings, and keeps sensitive topics such as health out unless you turn them on. Incognito chats are available on every plan.
- Scheduled work. Ask Claude to run a task on a schedule, such as a Monday inbox summary, and it can run in the cloud while your computer is off.
The models
As of October 2026, Anthropic’s pricing page lists four current models:
| Model | Released | What it is for | Plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | September 1, 2026 | Anthropic’s top model for long-running agents | Paid plans only: usage credits on Pro, included on Max |
| Opus 5.5 | September 22, 2026 | Daily driver for agentic coding and enterprise work | Pro and above |
| Sonnet 5.5 | September 28, 2026 | High-performance model for coding and agents | All plans |
| Haiku 5.5 | October 7, 2026 | Anthropic’s fastest, most cost-efficient model | All plans |
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5. Context windows reach up to 1 million tokens, depending on the model. Our Claude models explained guide compares them, and our launch reports cover Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5.
What Claude costs
Anthropic’s pricing page shows US prices. As of October 2026:
| Plan | Price (US) | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, memory, connectors, artifacts, Design, Slides and Docs; Sonnet and Haiku |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) | More usage, Opus, Research, Claude Code, Claude Science, unlimited projects, task scheduling, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365; Fable via usage credits |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | Five times Pro’s per-session usage, Fable included, higher output limits, priority access, $100 a month in API credits |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | Twenty times Pro’s per-session usage, with $200 a month in API credits |
| Team | $20 a seat a month billed annually ($25 monthly); premium seats $100 ($125 monthly) | For 2 to 150 people, with central billing, SSO and pooled API credits up to $500 a month |
| Enterprise | $20 a seat a month billed annually, plus usage at API rates | 20-seat minimum, admin and compliance controls |
How usage works:
- Session and weekly limits. Paid plans have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit across all models. You can see your reset time in Settings under Usage.
- Fable on Max. Max can spend up to 50% of its weekly limits on Fable models, which use the allowance faster than other models.
- Usage credits. Pro and Max subscribers can turn on usage credits to pay for work beyond the plan, and Pro uses them for Fable from the start.
- API credits. Max’s monthly API credits are for building your own apps on the Claude Platform. They don’t cover interactive Claude Code or extra usage in Claude, and unused credits expire each billing cycle.
- Billing. Pro can be paid monthly or annually; Max is monthly only. Anthropic notes that prices exclude tax and that mobile app store prices can differ.

Pros
- Excellent for long writing and documents, with context windows up to 1 million tokens depending on the model.
- Bigger tasks in the same chat. You don’t have to choose a mode before handing Claude a report or deck.
- A useful free plan that includes Design, Slides, Docs, connectors and memory.
- Strong coding tools, with Claude Code included from Pro.
- Clear memory controls, with editable topics and sensitive topics kept out by default.
- API credits on Max, which add real value for people who also build with Claude.
Cons
- Fable costs extra on Pro. Anthropic’s top model runs on pay-as-you-go credits unless you pay for Max.
- Usage limits can bite. Heavy sessions, Opus, Fable and long tasks use the five-hour and weekly allowance faster, and the free plan is limited.
- No Claude Code or Research on Free. Both start with Pro.
- Fewer consumer extras than ChatGPT. Anthropic’s plan comparison doesn’t list an image generator, and ChatGPT also has shopping, finance and health tools.
- Rollouts vary. The merged chat and task experience is reaching accounts in stages, so two people on the same plan may see different screens.
- Training is an opt-out on Free, Pro and Max, so check your privacy settings.
Who should use Claude?
Choose Claude if most of your work is writing, editing, reading long documents, analysis or coding, or if you want to hand off whole tasks and get back finished files. The free plan is a good place to start. Pro at $20 suits most regular users and adds Claude Code and Opus; Max makes sense if you use Claude all day, want Fable included or also build on the API.
