The short answer
Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web and replies with numbered citations. It is the best-known tool for sourced research, with Pro Search, Research reports, Projects, the Comet browser and Perplexity Computer agents. The free plan covers everyday questions, Pro costs $20 a month ($17 billed annually) and Max costs $200 a month ($167 billed annually).
Perplexity is the AI tool people reach for when they want an answer with sources attached. Every reply carries numbered citations, which makes it easier to check a claim than in a typical chatbot. This review covers what Perplexity does, what each plan costs, where it is strong and where it is limited, and who should use it. It is based on Perplexity’s own pricing page and help center, plus our earlier research on the product, and we haven’t run extended hands-on tests.

What Perplexity can do
- Cited answers. Ask a question and Perplexity searches the web, writes an answer and numbers each source. You can select a citation to open it. Perplexity says every answer includes inline citations so you can verify claims.
- Pro Search and Research. Pro Search makes multiple searches across dozens of sources, with model choice. Research is its deep-research mode, which runs dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources and writes a report in a few minutes, exportable as a PDF or document.
- Projects and files. Projects keep related sessions, files and instructions together. You can upload files up to 40 MB each, subject to a rolling weekly allowance.
- Computer. Perplexity Computer is an agent that breaks a goal into tasks and works through them with its own browser, file system and connected apps. It runs on credits, at 100 credits to the dollar.
- Comet. Comet is Perplexity’s free AI browser for desktop and mobile, with an assistant that researches as you browse.
- Automations and artifacts. The sidebar in the app also links to Automations and Artifacts, for recurring tasks and files Perplexity builds.

| Plan | Price | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited daily usage, citations in every answer, basic AI models |
| Pro | $17 a month annually ($20 monthly) | Expanded Computer access, 4,000 bonus credits, deep research, model selection, polished documents and apps, more usage and memory |
| Max | $167 a month annually ($200 monthly) | Maximum Computer usage, 10,000 monthly credits plus 35,000 bonus credits, expert-level research, frontier models, highest limits |
Pro and Max add premium data sources such as PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ for finance and market work, and Max includes Model Council runs, a feature that compares several models on one question. Enterprise plans are available separately.
Pros
- Citations on every answer, which speeds up verification.
- A generous free plan for everyday questions.
- Several models in one place, so you can switch if one answer looks weak.
- Deep research that is fast. Research reports usually arrive within minutes.
- A browser and an agent under the same account.
Cons
- Credit-based Computer. Computer tasks use credits, and Pro starts with a one-time bonus rather than a monthly allowance, so heavy use needs Max or top-ups.
- Citations are not a guarantee. A cited source can still be misread or low quality, so open the links for anything important.
- Usage limits. The free plan allows few Pro Searches and Research queries, and uploads have a weekly allowance.
- Interface changes often, so labels in guides can go out of date.
Who should use Perplexity?
Choose Perplexity if your main use is research, fact-checking, market or academic lookups, or if you want an assistant that shows its sources by default. If you want voice, a large app ecosystem and creative tools, look at ChatGPT first, and compare directly in Perplexity vs ChatGPT. For the product facts, see the Perplexity profile.
