Claude Cowork and chat merge into one Claude: what changes and who gets it first

Anthropic is folding Claude Cowork into regular Claude chat. From September 16, 2026, Pro and Max subscribers start moving to a single Claude conversation that handles both quick questions and long, multi-step jobs, so there is no longer a separate place to go for bigger work. The update also adds Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta and brings Claude Design into conversations.

What’s changing

Until now, Claude had a chat for quick answers and Cowork for bigger jobs. Cowork brought Claude Code’s abilities to everyday knowledge work: it could use your files, browser and connected apps, run tasks in the cloud and on a schedule, and turn out spreadsheets and presentations.

In the merged Claude, you just ask. Claude works out what a request needs, so everything Cowork and Design could do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills and connectors you already have. Bigger jobs keep running after you close your laptop, you can check on progress from your phone, and a recurring job — a report every Monday, say — can be scheduled so Claude starts it without being asked.

Claude Docs, Slides and Design

What Claude makes no longer needs a separate place either:

• Claude Docs: ask for a document and you write it together, editing directly or leaving comments for Claude.
• Claude Slides: ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides. You can edit them, present straight from Claude or download them as PowerPoint or PDF.
• Claude Design: Anthropic’s visual design tool now works inside conversations too. If you use Claude Design on its own, it keeps working as before.

Anything you make with Docs, Slides or Design lives at a single shareable link that also opens on your phone. All three are in beta on paid plans, and Enterprise admins decide when to switch them on.

Why Anthropic merged Cowork and chat

Anthropic says people used both modes and found it frustrating to decide where a task belonged — and work started in one didn’t carry over into the other. Rather than keep two places, it made Claude choose. The change also moves Claude closer to how rivals package their agents: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work and Microsoft Copilot both run longer tasks from the same assistant people chat with. You still decide what Claude does

By default, Claude asks before it takes an action. If you’d rather it keep working and only check in when something needs a closer look, you can turn that on. When a request is unclear, Claude asks rather than guessing.

Who gets the new Claude, and when

• Pro and Max: rolling out first, over the coming weeks, in the Claude app on web, desktop and mobile — for existing and new subscribers. There’s nothing to switch on.
• Team and Free: following soon.
• Enterprise: admins will hear from Anthropic at least 30 days before anything changes for their organisation.

The rollout is staged, so two accounts on the same plan may get it at different times.

What happens to your Cowork work

If you’ve been working in Cowork, everything carries over: your chats, tasks, projects, artifacts, connectors, skills and settings. If you mostly use chat, nothing changes in how you start a conversation.

There’s one catch. According to Anthropic’s help center, once your account has the new experience you can’t switch back to separate Chat and Cowork options.

What’s missing at launch

Anthropic’s help center lists a few gaps in the merged Claude for now:

• Add from GitHub isn’t supported yet.
• Conversation branching isn’t available.
• Search doesn’t include older Cowork tasks at first.

What it means for Claude users

For most people, the merge removes a decision rather than adding a feature: you describe the job, and Claude decides whether it’s a quick answer or a task to work through. The bigger shift is that documents and slides now come out of the same conversation as the research behind them.
