How the design works
Meta says the glasses are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3 mainly because of a two-part system. The glasses hold the sensors and display, while a puck, connected by an optical tether, handles compute, battery and storage and clips to your pocket or bag. The open sides and a passthrough camera keep you aware of what is happening nearby, so you can watch a full movie or work on a long flight without feeling shut off.
The display uses ultra-compact pancake lenses built for this device, with Dolby Vision for colour and contrast. Meta has integrated its Meta AI agent into the operating system, so you can play a movie, open an app or adjust your workspace by talking, looking and using hand gestures.
Movies and sports
- IMAX Enhanced: Meta says these are the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR glasses and one of the only ways to see select films in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio at home.
- Disney+: from November, subscribers can stream 3D movies such as Marvel’s The Avengers and Black Panther in select countries, with themed viewing environments including Tatooine, Avengers Tower and Scare Floor.
- Streaming partners: Meta names Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex, ESPN and Tubi, with Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ offering their 3D catalogues for the first time.
- Live sports: ESPN “Immersive Sports” with 8K streaming and 180-degree views starts with college football this year on Meta Quest, and once the glasses launch Meta expects more than 100 immersive live events a year with MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC.
- New 3D films: Meta is working with director James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision on “first time in 3D” blockbusters in 2027.
Work, gaming and calls
- Workspace: multiple private screens, full-colour passthrough so you can still see your desk and phone, and any flat surface can become a keyboard and touchpad.
- Games: more than 75 games at launch that you can play with hand gestures alone, and Xbox Cloud Gaming for hundreds more.
- Hologram calling: a photorealistic digital version of you, with your real-time expressions, for hands-free video calls. Meta says it works with whichever calling app you use, from WhatsApp to Zoom.
What we don’t know yet
Meta’s post gives a season rather than a date, lists a US price only, and describes streaming availability as “select countries”.
