How to turn off Siri on iPhone, AirPods, Apple Watch and Mac
Turn off Siri completely or just the parts you don't want — “Hey Siri”, the side button, Siri Suggestions and Siri reading messages on AirPods — with iOS 27 steps.
The short answer
To turn off Siri on iPhone, open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Turn Off Siri at the bottom. To keep Siri but stop it listening, go to Settings, Siri, Requests and choose Off. To stop Siri reading messages on AirPods, turn off Announce Notifications in Settings, Notifications.
You can switch Siri off completely, or keep it and turn off just the part that bothers you — the wake phrase, the side button, suggestions or Siri reading your messages out loud. The steps below are for iOS 27; on older versions the same settings may sit under Apple Intelligence & Siri instead of Siri.
Turn off Siri completely on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Siri.
- Tap Turn Off Siri at the bottom, then tap Turn Off Siri again to confirm.
Siri stops responding to your voice and buttons. Other Apple Intelligence features such as Writing Tools are separate; Apple’s iPhone User Guide covers turning those off in its “Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features” section.
Stop Siri listening for “Siri” or “Hey Siri”
If you like using Siri but don’t want it listening for the wake phrase:
- Open Settings and tap Siri.
- Tap Requests.
- Under “Siri” or “Hey Siri”, tap Off.
Tip: placing your iPhone face down also stops it responding to “Siri” or “Hey Siri”.
Stop the side button opening Siri
- Open Settings and tap Siri.
- Tap Requests.
- Turn off Press Side Button for Siri.
Switch from Siri AI back to Siri Classic
iOS 27 introduced Siri AI (Beta), the rebuilt Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later. It is available in English to start and not initially in the EU. If you prefer the previous Siri:
- Open Settings and tap Siri.
- Tap Turn Off Siri, then confirm.
- Tap Turn On Siri, then tap Use Siri Classic.
Stop Siri reading messages on AirPods
When Announce Notifications is on and your iPhone is locked, Siri reads incoming messages and notifications through compatible AirPods and Beats headphones. To turn it off:
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Tap Announce Notifications.
- Turn off Announce Notifications — or leave it on and turn it off only for specific apps, such as Messages.
You’ll find the same setting under Settings, then Siri, then Announce Notifications.
Turn off Siri Suggestions
Siri Suggestions recommend apps, contacts and actions in search, notifications and when you share. To choose where they appear:
- Open Settings and tap Siri.
- Tap Suggestions.
- Turn off the options you don’t want: Suggest Apps Before Searching, Allow Notifications, Show in App Library, Show When Sharing and Show Listening Suggestions.
To stop Siri learning from a particular app, go to Settings, Siri, App Access, choose the app and turn off Learn from this App.
Turn off Siri on Apple Watch
- On your Apple Watch, open Settings and tap Siri.
- Turn off the ways you don’t want to start Siri — listening for “Siri”, Raise to Speak and Press Digital Crown.
Turn off Siri on Mac
- Open System Settings.
- Click Siri (or Apple Intelligence & Siri) in the sidebar. You may need to scroll down.
- Turn off Siri.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if I turn off Siri on my iPhone?
Siri stops responding to your voice, the side button and other shortcuts, and Siri AI stops working. Other Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools, are controlled separately, so turning off Siri doesn't turn them off.
How do I stop Siri from listening?
Go to Settings, tap Siri, tap Requests, then choose Off under "Siri" or "Hey Siri". Your iPhone stops listening for the wake phrase, but you can still use Siri with the side button unless you turn that off too.
Can I turn off Siri AI but keep the old Siri?
Yes. In iOS 27, turn off Siri in Settings, then tap Turn On Siri and choose Use Siri Classic to go back to the previous version of Siri.
Why does Siri read my messages on AirPods?
That's Announce Notifications. When it's on and your iPhone is locked, Siri reads incoming messages and notifications through compatible headphones. Turn it off in Settings, then Notifications, then Announce Notifications.
How do I turn off Siri Suggestions?
Go to Settings, tap Siri, then Suggestions, and turn off the places you don't want suggestions, such as notifications, App Library and sharing. To stop Siri learning from a specific app, tap App Access, choose the app and turn off Learn from this App.
