Microsoft Copilot plans explained: free app, Microsoft 365 Personal, Premium and Business

Microsoft Copilot has more plans than most assistants, because it’s both a free standalone app and a set of features layered into Microsoft 365. This guide sorts out what’s free, what a home subscription adds, what happened to the old Copilot Pro plan, and roughly what businesses pay, using Microsoft’s own pricing pages as of September 2026.

Microsoft Copilot plans at a glance

The free Copilot app

Copilot’s own app is free on the web, Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, subject to available capacity and usage limits. It works as a general assistant, but it doesn’t give you Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook, that needs a Microsoft 365 subscription below.

Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium and Pro

Microsoft’s individual pricing page lists four tiers, each unlocking more Copilot usage:

• Personal ($9.99/month, $99.99/year): Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, 1 TB of OneDrive storage, Teams and Defender, plus “advanced Copilot chat with higher usage than free,” visual AI assistance, AI-generated audio and AI image creation.
• Family ($12.99/month, $129.99/year): everything in Personal for up to 6 people, with 6 TB of shared storage. Copilot features in the apps are available only to the subscription owner, not other family members.
• Premium ($19.99/month, $199.99/year): “advanced Copilot chat with extensive usage,” limited agentic AI, and extensive visual and audio assistance, on top of everything in Family.
• Pro ($99.99/month, billed monthly only): the highest usage limits across Copilot chat, agentic AI, visual assistance and audio generation.

What happened to Copilot Pro

If you remember Copilot Pro as a separate $20-a-month subscription, that product is gone. Microsoft stopped selling it to new customers on October 1, 2025, and moved its features into Microsoft 365 Premium. Existing Copilot Pro subscribers kept access for a transition period that ended on August 1, 2026, so the standalone plan is now fully retired. If you’re comparing old reviews or guides that mention “Copilot Pro” at $20, they’re describing a plan that no longer exists; Premium and Pro above are its replacements.

Microsoft 365 Copilot for business

Businesses buy Copilot differently from individuals. Microsoft’s pricing lists, for organisations under 300 users:

• Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot: around $23.50 a user a month billed annually.
• Microsoft 365 Business Premium with Copilot: around $32 a user a month billed annually, adding advanced security and more storage.
• A standalone Copilot add-on for an existing Microsoft 365 subscription: discounted to around $18 a user a month through the end of 2026 (usually around $21).

Enterprise organisations pay a separate add-on price on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 licence. Because pricing depends on the base licence your organisation already holds, check Microsoft’s own pricing page for your exact quote before budgeting.

Copilot vs Copilot vs Copilot: don’t confuse them

Which Copilot plan should you choose?

• You just want quick answers, no Office integration: the free app.
• You’re one person who wants Copilot in Word, Excel and Outlook: Personal.
• You’re sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription with family: Family, remembering only the owner gets Copilot.
• You use Copilot heavily and Personal’s limits feel tight: Premium.
• You hit Premium’s limits too: Pro.
• You’re buying for a team or company: talk to Microsoft about the business and enterprise tiers, since pricing depends on your existing licences.
